Researchers in Australia and the Philippines have found that Brassica plants such as radish, mustard and broccoli can be used to reduce yield losses caused by bacterial wilt. This disease is the main cause of vegetables in tropical crops. Brassica plants contain isothiocyanate (abbreviated as ITCS) hydrazine compound. This compound inhibits pests and diseases. When ITCS is released by fertilization, the soil-borne pests and pathogens are suppressed, increasing the yield of Solanum vegetables such as potatoes, tomatoes and eggplants by 40%. This effect is called "biofumigation." This project has evaluated the Brassica plants and how best to manage the biofumigant effect. Field trials are currently underway in the Philippines and North Queensland to examine ways to make biofumigants and enhance their effectiveness in developing countries. This research team comes from experts from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization of Australia, Queensland's major industrial sector and the Philippine National Crop Protection Center. This project is funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research.
