To reduce environmental impact, several methods can be applied. One effective approach is water-based cutting, such as water surface cutting or submersion cutting. These techniques significantly minimize pollution by containing the plasma arc within a water curtain.
In water surface cutting, a water reservoir is used, and the worktable is made up of multiple pointed steel rods that support the material above the water. A circulating water pump supplies water to the torch, creating a continuous water curtain around the plasma arc. This setup helps suppress noise, smoke, and metal vapor, reducing environmental contamination. A flow rate of 55–75 liters per minute is typically required for this system.
Underwater cutting involves placing the workpiece about 75mm below the water surface. The worktable consists of pointed steel members, which help collect chips and slag during the cutting process. When the torch is activated, compressed air first clears the nozzle area before the plasma arc is ignited. Maintaining the correct water level is crucial, so a water level control system, along with a pump and reservoir, should be in place to manage water intake and drainage.
Most manual or automated plasma cutting stations should have an exhaust system to remove fumes from the workshop. However, even with this, emissions may still exceed acceptable limits. If pollution levels go beyond national standards, additional smoke and dust filtration systems should be installed to ensure compliance.
