Hardhat above scratches

Since the old helmets had reached their expiration date, the company provided us with new ones. We really like these new helmets—we clean them regularly and are always careful when wearing them, afraid of any scratches or dirt. One day, while working on a device in a tight space with an oily valve, I looked at the new hard hat and decided not to wear it. I said to my supervisor: “Master, I don’t want to wear the safety helmet here. If it gets oily, it will look bad. I’ll be careful.”

The master smiled and replied, “The helmet isn’t just for decoration. Its purpose is to protect you. If you’re too worried about getting it dirty every time you work, then what’s the point of having it?” I was still hesitant to put on the brand-new helmet, but I did so anyway. Soon after, my head hit a pipe above me with a loud bang. I saw stars, and my ears were ringing. When I took off the helmet, I noticed a scratch on it. I was scared, but I was also grateful that I hadn’t been seriously hurt. The scratch stood out clearly on the new helmet, but it reminded me that the helmet is my protector. From that moment on, I made sure to follow all safety rules strictly.

Thinking back to the first time I wore a heavy helmet, I felt uncomfortable, especially in the summer when the inner lining was hot and stuffy. I often wanted to take it off, but I quickly realized how important it was. At night, while inspecting equipment, I bumped into cold railings, ladders, corners, and pipes. Each time, I was thankful for the protection the helmet offered. Every scratch on it was a silent reminder of the dangers we face and how the helmet shields us from harm. It may have a short life, but it plays a vital role in keeping us safe.

It’s not just helmets that protect us—work clothes, safety shoes, gloves, earplugs, and more all serve the same purpose. As workers, we must learn to respect and care for them. Looking back at how careless I used to be with my helmet, I feel ashamed. I hope it's not too late to start appreciating them now. We won’t give up on our gear just because it’s scratched or worn. Each mark tells a story of protection and sacrifice. The helmet is more than just equipment—it’s our partner, our guardian, and our silent hero.
