The hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide absorption tower, a key non-standard piece of equipment in the -101°C low-temperature methanol washing system, has recently been successfully commissioned at the coal-based methanol plant of Erdos Jinchengtai Chemical Company in Inner Mongolia. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the localization of low-temperature methanol washing technology in China. It not only provides practical experience and essential data for revising the national standard "low-temperature alloy steel plates for pressure equipment" but also represents a major breakthrough in domestic industrial technology.
As a core component of the low-temperature methanol washing process, this absorption tower is responsible for removing hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide from the process gas. The equipment operates under high pressure and extremely low temperatures, requiring advanced materials and sophisticated design. Since the 1980s, China had relied on imported technology and steel sheets to manufacture such critical components.
However, Wuhan Donghai Petrochemical Heavy Equipment Co., Ltd. has made remarkable progress through extensive research and innovation. They developed the first domestically produced hydrogen sulfide/carbon dioxide absorption tower using 08Ni3DR steel, which was successfully applied in the 1.8 million tons per year coal-to-methanol project of Erdos Jinchengtai Chemical Company. This marked the first time that 08Ni3DR steel was used in the production of low-temperature pressure vessels in China.
A 120-day trial run demonstrated that the absorption tower outperformed its design specifications in terms of steam consumption and washing efficiency. Additionally, the overall operating cost during full-load operation was found to be lower than that of similar products worldwide, confirming the technical and economic advantages of this locally developed solution.
This successful application highlights the growing capabilities of Chinese manufacturers in producing high-performance, specialized industrial equipment. It also sets a strong foundation for future advancements in the field of low-temperature chemical processing and contributes to the broader goal of technological self-reliance in the energy sector.
