Paper cup purchase, use note cup mouth and bottom blank

In the Beijing market, paper cups have become a common item in supermarkets, tea shops, coffee houses, and soy milk stalls. However, not all of them meet national safety standards. A reporter recently visited several locations and found that while some paper cups comply with regulations, others do not. For example, certain cups from well-known brands like Yonghe Dawang and Starbucks appear clean, with only a small pattern in the middle. The white space around the rim and bottom is usually required to prevent ink from coming into contact with the mouth or the inside of the cup. However, many smaller vendors and street-side stalls use paper cups that fail to meet these standards. Some cups are fully printed, with no white space at the top or bottom. One example was a soy milk cup sold at a small shop, which had an entire bean pattern covering the whole surface. Similarly, a handmade café in Chaoyang District used cups that were completely blank and bright, lacking any white area. Even in supermarkets, a lavender-patterned cup was found to have insufficient white space on the body, violating national rules. According to Dong Jinshi, Executive Vice President and Secretary General of the International Food Packaging Association, the requirement for white space on the rim and bottom of paper cups is aimed at preventing ink contamination. When people drink from printed cups, their lips may touch the printed area, potentially ingesting harmful substances if the ink contains benzene. Additionally, during the packaging process, the bottom of one cup might come into contact with the inner part of another, causing color transfer and contamination. Dong also pointed out that this issue isn't limited to paper cups. Many other paper products, such as paper bowls and lunch boxes, face similar problems. During production and transportation, items are often stacked together, leading to direct contact between outer and inner surfaces. This can result in contamination when the products are used. He emphasized that while it's ideal to avoid printing on the outside of cups, it’s also important to include company information for traceability. Experts stress that while the issue of printed patterns is easy to spot, identifying whether the paper used meets food-grade standards is more challenging. Many companies still fail to comply with regulations, making it crucial for manufacturers to strictly follow national guidelines to ensure consumer safety.
