Teach you how to install wallpaper

Wallpaper is a popular choice for home decoration, offering both aesthetic appeal and a way to personalize living spaces. However, the success of wallpaper installation depends not only on the design but also on proper techniques during installation and maintenance. Poorly installed wallpaper can lead to unsightly bubbles, wrinkles, or even peeling, which can ruin the overall look of your walls. This guide will walk you through the essential steps for installing wallpaper correctly and effectively.

Step 1: Prepare Your Tools and Materials

Before starting the installation, gather all the necessary tools and materials. You'll need items such as a plumb bob, measuring tape, pencil, roller, plastic bucket, water bucket, seam roller, paperboard, brush, scraper, utility knife, sponge, small brush, ladder, and a workbench that's at least 53 cm wide and 1.5 meters long. For adhesives, use wallpaper paste or white glue, depending on the type of wallpaper you're working with.

Step 2: The Installation Process

The installation process involves three main stages: cutting the wallpaper, applying the adhesive, and finally placing the wallpaper on the wall.

Step 2.1: Cutting the Wallpaper

Before cutting, check the color number and batch number of the wallpaper to ensure consistency. If the wallpaper has a pattern, make sure it’s aligned properly. Measure the height of the wall and calculate how many strips you’ll need. Keep in mind that the length of the wallpaper should be 5 cm longer than the wall height to allow for trimming. After cutting, label each piece with its serial number and direction using a pencil. Always cut all the pieces at once and stack them neatly to avoid confusion later.

Step 2.2: Applying the Adhesive

Mix the wallpaper paste according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Typically, this involves mixing 160 grams of powder with 4 liters of water, and adding 10% white glue to strengthen the adhesive. Stir the mixture thoroughly and let it rest for a few minutes before using. Apply the glue evenly to the back of the wallpaper using a roller, making sure not to apply too much. For edges, use a small brush to apply a stronger adhesive mix (1:1 ratio of paste to white glue) to ensure better adhesion.

Step 2.3: Folding and Waiting Time

Once the glue is applied, fold the wallpaper in half, ensuring the edges align perfectly. Let it rest for about 3 minutes, but do not exceed 15 minutes. This allows the adhesive to become more effective before placing the wallpaper on the wall.

Step 3: Hanging the Wallpaper

Before hanging, ensure the wall is clean, dry, and smooth. Use a plumb bob to create a vertical reference line. Start from the most visible area or near the main light source, depending on the pattern size. Carefully position the first strip along the line, adjusting it until it’s perfectly aligned. Use a squeegee to press the wallpaper onto the wall, smoothing out any air bubbles or excess glue. Trim the excess at the top and bottom, and carefully join the seams with a special glue mix, ensuring they are smooth and invisible.

Proper installation ensures your wallpaper looks great for years to come. Following these steps will help you achieve a professional finish and enjoy the beauty and durability of your new wall decor.
