In recent developments, the National Agricultural Genetically Modified Organism Safety Committee has reviewed and approved three genetically modified (GM) soybean varieties for import and processing in China. These include the herbicide-resistant soybean CV127 developed by BASF Agrochemicals, the insect-resistant soybean MON87701 from Monsanto Far East Ltd., and the dual-resistant variety MON87701×MON89788. This marks a significant step in China's approach to GM agricultural products.
CV127 has already received commercial approval in several countries, including the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, and others. Similarly, MON87701 is widely accepted in the U.S., Canada, Japan, and the European Union, while MON87701×MON89788 is approved in South Korea, Argentina, Brazil, and parts of Europe. These approvals highlight the global acceptance of these GM crops.
The Ministry of Agriculture previously issued a document titled “Transgenic Express Paper,†emphasizing that GM foods that pass safety assessments are safe for consumption. It reassures the public that no need exists to fear “transformation†or genetic modification as long as proper safety protocols are followed.
Currently, China has approved safety certificates for four GM crops: cotton, soybeans, corn, and rapeseed. While GM cotton is cultivated domestically, the other three are only permitted for processing purposes. According to Chinese regulations, imported GM crops cannot be planted within the country, ensuring they remain strictly for industrial use.
Many consumers express concerns about GM ingredients in everyday products like soybean oil. Experts clarify that transgenes are primarily found in proteins, which are removed during oil extraction. As a result, refined oils typically contain no detectable GM components.
Food safety expert Dong Jinshi emphasized that while GM foods are considered harmless under current scientific understanding, they should still be consumed with caution. He recommended that vulnerable groups, such as children, pregnant women, and those of childbearing age, limit their intake to minimize potential risks.
Globally, attitudes toward GM foods vary. The U.S. has over 5,000 GM-containing products on the market, though labeling is voluntary. In contrast, the EU requires clear labeling, and many Asian countries remain cautious. Despite these differences, rigorous scientific evaluation remains essential before any GM product can enter the market.
This ongoing dialogue reflects the complexity of balancing innovation, safety, and consumer trust in the realm of genetically modified agriculture.
