A few years ago, I had the chance to test a software similar to AutoCAD—Zhongwang CAD 2011. Now, Zhongwang Software has launched the latest version, Zhongwang CAD+ 2014. Its updated interface and enhanced features immediately caught my attention, so I decided to conduct a thorough evaluation of this new product. Additionally, the download and installation package is only 230MB, which is a major plus for me. The installation process is straightforward and similar to most CAD software, so I won’t go into too much detail here.
**First Impression:**
The interface of Zhongwang CAD+ 2014 has transitioned from a classic layout to a Ribbon-based design, much like what Microsoft introduced in its applications. The functional areas and command buttons are very similar to those in AutoCAD. While new users may not be too concerned about the interface, long-time AutoCAD users will appreciate the familiar layout, as it reduces the learning curve and makes the transition smoother.
As shown in the image above, there's a standard tab bar that allows easy switching between multiple open files. This feature enhances user experience and improves workflow efficiency.
**Usage Habits:**
I've done several tasks with Zhongwang CAD+ 2014. In terms of basic operations, there's almost no difference compared to AutoCAD, and the shortcut commands are the same. This means that experienced AutoCAD users can quickly adapt to using CAD+.
However, there are some minor differences. For instance, I sometimes need to access the menu, but I couldn't find the settings easily. Also, the print style sheet can't be placed in multiple paths, and PDFs aren't imported as base maps. These issues can be bypassed with simple workarounds, and the good news is that future updates will improve the PDF import functionality.
**Other Features:**
**Gesture Wizard**
One of the standout new features is the Gesture Wizard, which allows users to invoke CAD commands through mouse gestures. For example, holding down the right mouse button and dragging down then to the right displays a blue "L" on the screen, triggering the Line command. It’s important to note that if the shortcut menu isn’t enabled, this feature won’t work.
**Intelligent Voice**
The intelligent voice function is another unique feature. It enables users to insert audio into CAD files, similar to how cloud lines are modified. This feature is especially useful for multi-department collaboration, as it provides a more vivid and intuitive way to communicate compared to traditional text annotations. However, it’s worth mentioning that audio cannot be printed.
**Compatibility**
Software compatibility is crucial for users. Fortunately, Zhongwang CAD+ 2014 supports nearly all CAD drawings. I tested by editing and saving drawings created in AutoCAD within Zhongwang CAD+ and vice versa, and everything worked seamlessly. Additionally, AutoCAD’s .NET programs run smoothly on this platform.
**Dynamic Block**
Dynamic blocks are essential for designers. In Zhongwang CAD+ 2014, block design has become more flexible, allowing users to view, insert, edit, and save dynamic blocks freely. According to reports, the next version will support creating dynamic blocks, further enhancing this feature. However, when it comes to 3D graphics and rendering, I still rely on other software for advanced rendering tasks.
**Zhongwang CAD Touch**
If you're planning to use Zhongwang CAD+ 2014, I highly recommend trying Zhongwang CAD Touch, a free mobile CAD application. I used it on my iPad 2 to open DWG files and make smooth modifications, such as adding annotations, changing layer properties, and more. It’s a great tool for on-the-go editing.
**Summary:**
When it comes to purchasing CAD software, cost often plays a big role. If price isn’t the main concern, users should carefully consider their specific needs. Zhongwang CAD+ 2014 offers performance comparable to AutoCAD at a more affordable price, making it an excellent choice for most users. Not only does it provide similar functionality, but it also offers more value for the money.
