China's first ultra-thin aluminum foil production process

Ultra-thin aluminum foil is widely used in food packaging, cigarette paper, cosmetics and other industries, but the production process is extremely complicated. Sino-US joint venture Yunnan Xinmei Aluminum Foil Co., Ltd. breaks through the traditional process of producing ultrabook aluminum foil with only 480 to 520 millimeters of hot rolled coils in the world. It has pioneered the production of self-produced cast blanks in batch production with independent intellectual property rights at home and abroad. The thin-gauge aluminum foil forms a complete set of process technology system, which has subverted the traditional understanding of aluminum foil production concepts at home and abroad and made important contributions to the development of the Chinese aluminum foil industry to the world. Recently, the company has obtained 4 authorized patents, and has become China's ultra-thin "Electronics, electricity, capacitors with aluminum foil," the national standard compiler.

According to the company’s general manager, Gao Yan, China’s aluminum foil production exceeded that of the United States in 2005 and became a primary aluminum foil powerhouse. However, about 60% of them are used in air-conditioning and other thicker heat-dissipating products, and the production of double-null foils representing the production technology level of aluminum foil is only about 110,000 tons, and some of the high value-added products such as 0.0045mm and 0.005mm are zero-thin and ultra-thin. Aluminum foil is all dependent on imports. Since 2004, the company has imported hot-rolled aluminum billets from foreign countries to produce double-zero aluminum foil, which has high costs and low output and cannot compete with foreign companies. Since 2006, with the support of the Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Department, the company has carried out the project technology research on the “key technology for the production of double-zero aluminum foil for casting and billet rolling”, trying to use self-produced cast steel blanks as raw materials, around the relevant high efficiency and environmental protection. The key technologies for narrow-area control of alloy composition, homogenization of cast-rolled billets, and optimization of rolling have been independently developed to produce high-quality, low-cost, double-zero ultra-thin aluminum foil.

According to expert appraisals, this product fills the gap in China, replaces imports, and achieves volume export. The product quality has reached the international advanced level of producing similar products using the hot rolled blank process, and will further promote the miniaturization and weight reduction of China's electronic components.

In 2008, the company added 11012 tons of double-null aluminum foil, of which 806 tons of ultra-thin aluminum foil of 0.0045 mm and 0.005 mm, added 32.358 million yuan of output value, and added 2.18 million yuan of exports. At present, the company has obtained stable overseas orders from General Electric of America, Cooper of the United States and ABB of Australia, and has become China's enterprise qualified as a capacitor aluminum foil supplier of General Electric of the United States, and has been awarded as a Chinese aluminum foil enterprise by the China Non-ferrous Metal Processing Industry Association.
