Factors Affecting the Flowering of Geranium:
Geraniums are beautiful flowering plants, but their blooming can be affected by several factors. Understanding these elements can help you grow healthier and more vibrant flowers.
Firstly, overwatering or excessive rain can lead to waterlogged soil, which causes root rot. This results in yellow leaves, weak growth, and a lack of flowers. It’s important to ensure proper drainage and avoid keeping the soil constantly wet.
Secondly, too much fertilizer—especially nitrogen—can promote leafy growth at the expense of flowers. On the other hand, not enough nutrients can hinder overall plant development. To strike the right balance, it's best to apply a phosphorus and potassium-rich fertilizer during early spring or autumn to encourage strong blooms.
Temperature also plays a crucial role. If the temperature stays above 20°C in winter with poor ventilation, the plant may become leggy and fail to flower properly the following season. Conversely, if temperatures drop below 0°C, the plant can suffer from frost damage, causing yellow and soft leaf edges. Geraniums are sensitive to sudden temperature changes, which may cause buds to drop prematurely.
Excessive sunlight, especially during summer, can burn the leaf edges, leading to poor growth or even loss of flowers and leaves. Providing partial shade during the hottest parts of the day can protect your geraniums from sunburn.
Over-pruning or heavy topping can delay flowering and reduce the number of blooms. Additionally, when growing geraniums indoors during winter and spring, insufficient light can prevent flowering altogether. Even formed buds may shrink and dry out without enough sunlight. So, make sure your plants receive adequate light during the colder months.
