Japanese experts visit the Chinese Academy of Sciences near the Institute of Laser Research

From May 23 to May 28, Professor Hattori and Dr. Lu Liang from the National Institute of Radiological Science visited the Institute of Modern Physics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The visit aimed to strengthen international collaboration in advanced accelerator technologies and explore new research opportunities.

Professor Hattori is a leading figure in the field of linear accelerators. He introduced the innovative Hybrid Single Chamber (HSC) concept, which integrates RFQ and DTL linear accelerators into a single cavity for the first time. This design allows ion beams to be accelerated to a medium-low energy range (around 2 MeV/u) within just two meters, significantly simplifying the low- and medium-energy sections of the accelerator and reducing overall costs. Since 2012, he has been working with the Near Objects team, and plans to use their high-charge laser ion source to conduct full-scale tests on the HSC design.

During the visit, Dr. Lu Liang delivered a lecture on the latest developments in direct plasma injection using a laser ion source. Professor Hattori and Dr. Lu Liang also presented talks on laser sources, direct plasma injection techniques, and linear accelerator systems. They engaged in detailed discussions with researchers and graduate students at the Center for Near-Earth Linear Accelerators, sharing insights and exploring potential future collaborations.

The Japanese experts also toured the Institute of Near-Earth and reviewed the details of previous cooperation agreements. They confirmed that the HSC cavity will be delivered to the site in June, marking a key step forward in joint research efforts between the two institutions.

In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, mastering cutting-edge innovations is crucial for driving progress. Laser technology stands out as one of the most promising fields in high-tech development. While China has made notable advances in this area, core technologies still require further refinement. Collaborations with countries like Japan play a vital role in accelerating China’s research and development in laser technology, offering valuable knowledge exchange and technical support.
