Japanese experts visit the Chinese Academy of Sciences near the Institute of Laser Research


From May 23 to 28, Professor Hattori and Dr. Lu Liang from the National Institute of Radiological Science visited the Institute of Modern Physics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Professor Hattori is a globally recognized expert in linear accelerator technology. He pioneered the Hybrid Single Chamber (HSC) linear accelerator concept, which integrates RFQ (Radio Frequency Quadrupole) and DTL (Drift Tube Linac) systems into a single cavity for the first time. This innovative design allows ion beams to be accelerated to a medium-low energy range (up to 2 MeV/u) within just 2 meters, significantly simplifying the structure of the low- and medium-energy sections and reducing overall costs. Since 2012, Hattori has been collaborating with the Near Objects team, and he plans to use their high-charge laser ion source to conduct comprehensive principle tests of the HSC system.

During the visit, Dr. Lu Liang delivered a presentation on the latest developments in laser ion sources and direct plasma injection techniques. Both experts shared insights on laser-based ion sources, direct plasma injection methods, and advanced linear accelerator designs. They engaged in detailed discussions with researchers and graduate students at the Center for Near Linear Accelerators, exchanging ideas and exploring potential future research directions.

The two Japanese visitors also toured the Near-Earth Institute, where they reviewed and discussed the details of previous collaboration agreements. It was confirmed that the HSC cavity will be delivered to the near-site in June, marking the next phase of joint research efforts between the two institutions.

Laser technology stands out as one of the most promising fields in high-tech development. Although China has made notable progress in this area, core technologies remain underdeveloped. Collaborations with international partners like Japan are crucial for advancing China's laser research and enhancing its global competitiveness.
