EU develops new lithium-sulfur battery with energy density exceeding 310Wh / kg

According to the official website of the European Union, the most critical lithium-sulfur battery research project in Europe supported by the European Union's "Horizon 2020" framework plan-the lithium-sulfur battery project for electric vehicles (ALISE) has now developed lithium with an energy density of more than 310 Wh / kg Sulfur battery. This type of battery is lighter, has a higher energy density, and does not require critical raw materials.

The ALISE project is dedicated to the research and development of new materials and the electrochemical treatment process of lithium-sulfur technology (TRL4). Its project goal is to develop a stable lithium-sulfur battery of 500 watt-hours / kg. The main research and development include: battery durability, battery testing, Battery life cycle assessment, etc., to ensure battery safety, recyclability and competitive low cost. At present, ALISE has made substantial breakthroughs in new battery components, battery cell integration and related architecture.

At present, the lithium-sulfur battery is a lighter electric vehicle power battery than the lithium-ion battery. Looking at the prototype level of the battery cell at 440 Wh / kg, it only reaches 17% of the theoretical sulfur energy density (2600 Wh / kg). By improving materials, components and manufacturing processes, the energy density of lithium-sulfur batteries can be 800 watt-hours / kg. Test data shows that lithium-sulfur batteries reduce the weight of lithium-ion battery packs of the same volume by 15%, and the range of pure electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles using lithium-sulfur batteries increases by about 2% to 10%.
