Scientists develop a new type of self-healing material: from 24 hours to 1 second from overdue

Over the past decade or so, self-healing materials for various purposes have been released. In the future, cars and spaceships can repair themselves. The self-healing materials inspired by squid recently claim that the self-healing ability is faster than most materials, and it only takes 1 second to repair itself.

The material was jointly developed by the scientific team of Pennsylvania State University and the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems. The project was partially funded by the U.S. Army Research Office (ARO) to provide more durable and flexible robot actuators. Reliable solution.

Certain moving parts of flexible robots will wear out over time after being subjected to repetitive pressure. So, like many others in the robotics field, researchers began to develop an innovative solution that could handle some repairs themselves.

The scientific team thought of the ring-shaped teeth used by squids to hold the prey. This type of teeth is characterized by a mixture of soft and hard proteins that allows the teeth to heal on their own when they are broken. The soft part facilitates the fusion of damaged proteins, while the hard part provides structural integrity and keeps the teeth strong.

By figuring out the repetitive sequences of these special proteins, the team was able to create synthetic versions with repetitive sets of amino acids in the bacterial bioreactor. Just like the squid teeth it imitated, this polymer can heal itself under the application of water and heat, and it only takes a fraction of the time of comparable materials.

The lead author of the paper, Abdon Pena-Francesch from Pennsylvania State University, said: "We were able to shorten the traditional 24-hour healing period to one second, so our protein-based soft robot can now repair itself immediately. In nature, Self-repair takes a long time. In this sense, our technology surpasses nature."

According to the team, even if the material is cut in half, it can heal and restore 100% of its original strength. In addition, it is completely biodegradable and can be recycled into the same original polymer, unlike many petroleum-based polymers that need to be completely recycled into other things.
