Guangxi Dejing Railway issued the first alumina train

On May 18th at 11:00 AM, a freight train carrying 21 cars of aluminum oxide departed from Jingxi Railway Station in Guangxi. This marked a significant milestone for the Dejing Railway, which had been operational for five months. The train symbolized a major step forward in Jingxi County's pursuit of its "Aluminum Dream." Jingxi and Pingguo counties are both part of the Baise Revolutionary District in Guangxi, located 196 kilometers apart. While Pingguo is known as the "Aluminum Capital of South China" with 290 million tons of bauxite reserves, Jingxi has even greater potential, with preliminary proven reserves of 406 million tons and long-term reserves estimated at 600 million tons. Despite this, Pingguo holds the title of "Southern Aluminum City." Why? The answer lies in infrastructure—specifically, transportation. Hu Shengsheng, deputy director of the logistics division at China Aluminium Co., Ltd. Guangxi Branch, explained that railway transport can save approximately 8 million yuan annually in logistics costs compared to road transport. The Nankun Railway, which passes through Pingguo, was opened in December 1997. Over the past 16 years, more than 10 million tons of aluminum products have been transported nationwide via this route, while over 10 million tons of raw materials have also been moved by rail. This large-scale, all-weather transportation system has driven the growth of Pingguo’s aluminum industry. By 2012, the county’s GDP exceeded 10 billion yuan, representing a sevenfold increase from 16 years earlier. In contrast, Jingxi County, which previously had no railway, faced significant challenges in developing its aluminum industry. Located on the border of southwestern Guangxi and adjacent to Vietnam, Jingxi is over 600 kilometers from Nanning, the capital. Of that distance, 127 kilometers involve the rugged Panshan Road. Transporting aluminum products to Nanning costs about 100 yuan per ton, nearly three times higher than in Pingguo. In December 2012, the Debao-Jingxi Railway connected with the Tiandong-Debao Railway, forming a "two-wing fly together" pattern with the Nankun Railway. This development reduced rail transport costs for alumina by around 30% compared to road transport. According to Xie Shubin, director of Jingxi Railway Station, the alumina train launched on May 18th demonstrated the maturity of the Dejing Railway's freight operations. Since its opening, the station has not only attracted alumina shipments but also 500,000 tons of manganese products from local sources. Future plans include marketing iron ore and coal imports from Longbang Port in Vietnam. Notably, Jingxi Railway Station is just 30 kilometers from Longbang Port, a Class I port. As railway freight operations continue to develop, the Dejing Railway will play an increasingly important role in connecting China with Vietnam and linking Vietnam to other key ASEAN countries, enhancing international trade routes.
