How to identify the quality of furniture:
Method 1: When the cabinet is closed, open the door and check the smell. If there is a strong, pungent odor, it may indicate high levels of formaldehyde. This is common in low-quality Chinese furniture, which often uses inferior materials and adhesives.
Method 2: If you can't see the internal structure of the panel, inspect the wood type. Most furniture on the market is made from MDF (medium density fiberboard), particleboard, or solid wood. For MDF, check the fineness of the wood fibers inside — high-quality MDF should have no visible wood residue. Test the hardness with your fingers; the harder the surface, the denser the material. Particleboard is less common, but one reputable brand is “Love Plate.†To assess quality, press lightly on the surface. If it feels soft or gives way easily, it may mean the glue used was insufficient. Also, if heavy objects are placed on it, the joints may loosen over time. A good indicator is also the smell — if it's very strong, it might be due to poor-quality resin glue or even no glue at all.
Solid wood is easier to identify. Look for natural wood grain patterns, and check the edges for any seams that might indicate veneer application. If the edges are smooth and seamless, it's likely real solid wood.
Regarding paint finish:
First, examine the shine. Painted finishes can be either brush-on, spray, or lacquer-free. Brush-on varnish tends to highlight the natural wood grain, while spray paint provides a more uniform color. Lacquer-free paints are usually less shiny and feel smoother due to sanding. The gloss level can vary depending on the type of paint used. A high-quality finish should have a consistent color and even brightness. The style of the paint should match the overall decor of your home. It’s best to keep the main color palette to 3-4 shades to avoid a cluttered look. Choose colors that complement the space and reflect your personal taste.
