NTN bearings are designed to perform reliably under a wide range of temperatures. For bearings with an outer diameter less than 240mm, the heat treatment process ensures stability at temperatures below 150°C. However, for applications that require operation above 150°C, special heat treatments are necessary. These high-temperature resistant NTN bearings are marked with suffixes S1 to S4 (according to DIN 623), each indicating a different maximum operating temperature:
- **S1**: Maximum operating temperature of 200°C
- **S2**: Maximum operating temperature of 250°C
- **S3**: Maximum operating temperature of 300°C
- **S4**: Maximum operating temperature of 350°C
For NTN bearings with an outer diameter greater than 240mm, they typically maintain stable performance at temperatures below 200°C.
In addition, some NTN bearings are made from glass fiber reinforced nylon 66, which is suitable for environments where the operating temperature does not exceed 120°C. These bearings often use oil for lubrication. If the oil contains additives, it may reduce the service life of the cage. Moreover, when the temperature exceeds 120°C, the aging oil can also negatively impact the bearing's longevity. Therefore, regular inspection and timely replacement of the lubricant are essential.
The temperature tolerance of sealed NTN bearings depends on the type of grease used between the components and the effectiveness of the seal. Sealed NTN bearings are typically lubricated with a high-quality lithium-based grease that can withstand short-term exposure to temperatures up to 120°C. However, once the operating temperature reaches 70°C or higher, the lifespan of the lithium-based grease decreases significantly.
If the bearing is expected to operate frequently at high temperatures, it’s recommended to use specialized high-temperature grease and ensure that the sealing components are made from heat-resistant materials. The standard contact seal is generally limited to a maximum temperature of 110°C.
When using high-temperature sealing compounds, caution must be taken, as certain fluorinated materials can emit harmful gases and smoke when exposed to temperatures over 300°C. In such cases, it is advisable to use a welding torch for disassembly to avoid damage to the bearing.
