Glass engraving is an artistic technique that has evolved from traditional porcelain carving. The origins of this practice can be traced back to the Qin and Han dynasties, where artisans used a method called “peeling jade†to remove enamel from surfaces. However, it wasn’t until the Wei and Jin dynasties that the ceramic industry flourished, leading to the creation of many exquisite pieces of porcelain.
At that time, emperors, officials, and scholars sought ways to preserve their poetry and calligraphy permanently. Artists began using a straight knife to carve the outlines of poems and characters onto unglazed porcelain before applying the glaze. This early form of porcelain carving laid the foundation for what would later become known as glass engraving.
During the Song Dynasty, kiln-fired porcelain became a prominent example of this technique, with intricate patterns carved into the surface before firing. By the late Qianlong period, the imperial court recognized the value of this art and established a special “manufacturing office†within the palace to oversee its development. The growing appreciation for calligraphy and craftsmanship led to more elaborate designs, including landscapes, flowers, birds, and even insects, all meticulously engraved onto porcelain.
As the technique advanced, it was adapted to glassware, allowing artists to directly etch intricate designs onto glass. This adaptation gave rise to what we now know as glass engraving—an art form that continues to captivate audiences with its beauty and precision. The process requires great skill, patience, and an eye for detail, making it not just a craft, but a living tradition passed down through generations.
