Short-term steel prices or weak shocks

Short-term steel prices or weak shocks Last week, the total iron ore inventory at major Chinese ports saw a slight increase. As of April 12, the combined stockpile reached 68.73 million tons, up by 770,000 tons, or 1.13% compared to the previous week. Among these, Australian ore accounted for 45.96%, marking a 0.08% monthly rise, while Indian ore dropped to 2.58%, a decrease of 0.25%. Pakistani ore remained at 21.66%, down 0.39% from the prior period. The Platts Iron Ore Index also rose slightly, reaching $142 per ton as of April 12, an increase of $6 from the previous week. Meanwhile, port inventories fell sharply again, with Indian ore’s share in the total dropping to 2.58%. This trend suggests that India's tightening export controls on iron ore may lead to a gradual withdrawal of Indian suppliers from the Chinese market this year. On the other hand, the overall trading volume in the port ore import market remained subdued, with mainstream resource shipments continuing to lag. However, some second-tier steel mills’ procurement activities led to a slight uptick in inquiries for non-mainstream resources. The recent price increase in imported ore appears more like a ripple effect, driven by port operators managing their own inventories. Steel mills remain cautious about importing ore due to poor profit margins, which has created resistance against higher prices. Despite this, limited port supplies still give port companies significant control over the market. It is expected that imported ore prices will remain stable or even strengthen slightly this week, with port inventories likely to see a small rise. Coke prices performed weakly last week, with port stocks increasing slightly. At Tianjin Port, coke inventory rose to 2.16 million tons, up 0.93% from the previous week. In Lianyungang, the stock climbed to 25.3 million tons, a 5.42% increase. Rizhao Port saw a sharp jump of 37.07% to 159,000 tons. With the stabilization of finished product prices, pressure on coke prices eased slightly. Additionally, the recent decline in coking coal prices helped reduce cost pressures on coking enterprises, leading to a modest improvement in profitability. However, steel mills remain hesitant in purchasing coke, and some coking companies have had to lower prices to clear warehouses. Given the rising port inventories, coke prices are expected to remain weak this week, with possible minor declines due to some steel mills adjusting their orders. Domestic steel prices fluctuated last week, and the total social steel inventory in China declined slightly. As of April 12, the total steel inventory fell by 1.45% to 21.213 million tons. Specifically, rebar inventory dropped to 10.278 million tons, down 2.0% from the previous week; wire rod fell to 2.954 million tons, a 3.1% decrease; hot-rolled steel increased slightly to 4.784 million tons, up 0.8%; cold-rolled steel fell to 1.679 million tons, down 0.7%; and medium plate inventory dropped to 1.618 million tons, a 1.2% decrease. At the terminal site, procurement volumes increased slightly, but middlemen were not eager to raise prices. Instead, they adopted a cautious approach, following market trends. As a result, thread and wire stock levels declined further, while the overhaul of mid-plate production lines and limited output reduced inventory in that segment. The arrival of high-priced resources and sluggish shipments also prevented hot-rolled steel inventories from rising. Overall, despite four consecutive weeks of declining steel stocks, the market still holds a large amount of inventory. The sharp drop in steel prices on Friday highlighted the limited demand for heavy products. It is expected that this week, finished steel prices will remain within a narrow range after a slight pullback, while steel society inventories may continue to fall.
