The long-standing dispute between Chinese shipowners and the global mining giant Vale has reignited. This week, a massive ore carrier named "Malaysia" from Vale entered a port in eastern China, marking the first time a large vessel has docked in the country since the ban on oversized ships was introduced in January 2012. The move has sparked frustration among local shipping companies.
The 400,000-ton ore carrier arrived at Lianyungang Port in Jiangsu Province on Monday and departed on Wednesday after unloading its cargo. In response, the China Shipowners Association sent a formal letter to the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Transport, and the Lianyungang Port Authority, accusing Vale of violating national regulations by operating without proper approval.
This is the first time Vale's vessel has docked in China since 2011. Following that, in early 2012, the Ministry of Communications revised port regulations, restricting access for super-large vessels unless they received special authorization. Industry analysts believe that once all 35 of Vale’s 400,000-ton ore carriers are operational, they could significantly reshape the dry bulk shipping market, potentially driving down freight rates and altering the existing supply-demand balance.
Chinese shipowners have been resisting these massive vessels due to the current downturn in the shipping industry, where overcapacity is a major concern. They also fear that Vale’s dominance could lead to a monopoly in the future, threatening smaller players in the market. As a result, many have joined a collective boycott against these enormous ships.
With this latest development, the tension between China’s domestic shipping sector and international mining giants continues to grow, raising questions about regulatory compliance and fair competition in the global shipping industry. (Reporter: Xiao Wei)
