Green and white porcelain, also known as "Shadow Green," "Hidden Green," or "Ying Qing," is a type of ceramic where the glaze color falls between green and white. This unique style was developed during the Song and Yuan dynasties in Jingdezhen and its surrounding kilns. It features a distinct aesthetic that reflects the artistic trends of its time. The production of Qingbai porcelain spread across several southern provinces, including Jiangxi’s Fuliang, Jingdezhen, Nanfeng's Baishe Kiln, Ji'an's Yonghe Kiln, Guangdong's Chaoan Kiln, Fujian's Dehua Kiln, Quanzhou's Bowl Kiln Town, Tong'an Kiln, and Nan'an Kiln.
Jingdezhen, the central hub of Qingbai porcelain production, saw the development of white-white porcelain during the Northern Song Dynasty. The porcelain at this time was characterized by fine, white bodies with high translucency. The glaze was highly transparent, glossy, and fluid, with colors ranging from pale blue to white with a slight greenish tinge. Early glazes sometimes had a yellowish tone, and the pieces were mostly everyday items like bowls, plates, bottles, jars, and even oil boxes. Many of these vessels bore markings such as "Wujia Box" or "Dianjia Box," typically in raised, straight script. Some inscriptions included characters like "Blue," "Zhu," and "Cheng."
The decorative techniques mainly involved carving and printing, often applied on the inner walls of bowls and plates. The depth of the carved patterns varied, with deeper areas showing darker glaze and shallower ones appearing whiter, creating a strong sense of layering. During the Song Dynasty, popular forms included plates, bowls, dishes, boxes, and soul bottles, especially the latter. Archaeological findings from tombs in the Jiangnan region have revealed beautifully crafted soul bottles featuring motifs like dragons, tigers, turtles, snakes, chickens, dogs, and phoenixes. These rare artifacts can now fetch up to a thousand dollars in the market.
By the middle of the Southern Song Dynasty, Jingdezhen potters were influenced by the composite support ring technique, which led to the formation of the "Mangkou" (open mouth) on plates and bowls. The body became slightly thicker, and the glaze split into two types: one white, the Other partially green. The styles remained similar to those of the Northern Song, with main bowl shapes evolving into curved walls. Decorative methods initially focused on carving and incising, with floral motifs like peonies and lotus flowers being common. Later, printing became more prevalent, with intricate layered designs and themes such as fish, water waves, and even narrative scenes.
