The Taiwan Army has spent nearly NT$60 billion to acquire 30 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, with the delivery ceremony taking place at the end of last year. These helicopters represent the latest upgraded version of the Apache model and are set to replace older models in the U.S. military. However, a recent safety issue has emerged: some engine gearbox screws were found loose in the U.S. fleet. In response, Boeing, the manufacturer, issued a recall and instructed all users to ground their helicopters for inspections and necessary overhauls.
The Taiwanese Army confirmed that the affected gearboxes have already been transported back to Taiwan for repairs. It is expected that the aircraft will be cleared for flight again next week. This means the helicopters have been grounded for almost two months, causing some disruption to training and operational schedules.
A photo of the affected component was shared online, showing the critical nature of the issue. The recall highlights the importance of regular maintenance and safety checks, even for advanced military equipment.
Wu Tianan, the Chief of Staff of the Army, stated that the third batch of helicopters scheduled for delivery next month will already have undergone the required maintenance on Boeing’s production line. This means those units will not need to be grounded for additional inspections. According to the original contract, all costs associated with this overhaul are being covered by the manufacturer, reducing the financial burden on the Taiwanese defense budget.
This incident underscores the complex logistics involved in maintaining modern military hardware, especially when it comes to international procurement. While the delay may cause temporary setbacks, the proactive approach taken by both the manufacturer and the army ensures long-term safety and operational readiness.
