Development of a carbon fiber reinforced plastic drive slide milling machining center

HC Plastics News: Due to the increasing application of component materials with poor cutting performance, the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology in Germany collaborated with Lerinc to develop a new milling center for carbon fiber reinforced plastic transmission parts.

In the automotive industry, more and more components are composed of materials with poor cutting properties, such as titanium alloys and Inconel. However, the production requirements of these materials are very high, because complex geometric designs such as three-dimensional blade profile design require higher mobility and accuracy of the machine axes. Therefore, when processing a complicated three-dimensional free cutting plane process, instability may occur, resulting in a component surface that does not meet the standard.

Vertical transmission five-axis milling machine with linear electric drive technology

The goal of the "New Linear Electric Drive Vertical Drive Five-Axis Milling Machine" project is to develop a new machining center that uses lightweight vertical drive carbon fiber reinforced plastic machine axes, while at the same time achieving the best rigidity requirements. Therefore, the milling machine should have stable dynamic structural performance and high acceleration acceleration values ​​for the X, Y and Z axes.

In this project, the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology is primarily engaged in the research of complete machine measurement technology and the optimization of machine tool power and thermal performance. The Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology studies the structure of the machine and explores the geometry, thermal and dynamic properties of the machine. In addition, the process efficiency under roughing and finishing conditions and under stable limit conditions is also confirmed.

New Z-axis headstock and beam

The advantages of the lightweight machine tool developed in this project benefit from a Z-axis headstock made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic and a new beam made of lightweight materials. Although the components are complex, the lightweight design of the transmission and the enhanced power and rigidity performance can still increase the number of machine tools, while increasing throughput and accuracy.
