The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) updated the terminology of the Diamond Certificate in the laboratory to align with the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) recent guidelines.
On Friday, GIA Labs said that the term "synthetic" would no longer be used when referring to laboratory cultivation of diamonds, both in the report and in the literature. The new report will also use the same 4Cs description as the GIA Natural Diamond Grading Report.
In addition, the certificate will be added with a QR code that links to GIA's Report Query System to provide consumers with more information about the process of growing diamonds in the laboratory. At the same time, it will also list all detected diamond clarity processing.
In the grading report on cultivating diamonds, GIA will indicate that the diamond is artificial and that the diamond is grown using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or high pressure high temperature (HPHT).
“In the past few years, the production technology of synthetic diamonds has made incredible progress.†GIA CEO Susan Jacques said: “With the increase in the weight, size and quantity of synthetic diamonds, As well as consumer understanding and expectations of the product, GIA is making some changes to match the revised FTC guidelines and changes in the consumer market."
Earlier this month, HRD Antwerp announced changes to its laboratory's report on diamond cultivation, including updating terminology to match natural diamond reports and expanding the color category of synthetic diamonds. The company will also release a laboratory diamond jewelry certificate in September.
The new GIA Lab Cultivating Diamond Certificate will be released on July 1. GIA pointed out that customers who purchased a laboratory diamond certificate from GIA before this date can redeem the new certificate for free.
The GIA new version of the laboratory cultivates a diamond grading certificate sample. The certificate uses the same 4Cs grading terminology and description as the natural diamond. The red box indicates the difference in the laboratory-graded diamond grading certificate, and a new project identification is added, indicating that the sample is a laboratory diamond, and that the diamond is a synthetic diamond and is grown by a laboratory.
