On the 19th, the Japanese researchers announced that they have discovered sea mud with a high concentration of rare earths on the seabed in the eastern part of the Indian Ocean. This is the first time that a sea-mud containing rare earths has been discovered outside the Pacific Ocean, which proves that rare earths may be widely distributed in the global ocean.

Rare earths are an indispensable resource in high-tech materials. The discovery of the rare earth was located in the Indian Ocean, about 1,000 kilometers west of Jakarta, Indonesia, not far from Cocos Islands, which belongs to Australia.

Compared to the Pacific Ocean, the location of rare earths in this location is deeper and mining is more difficult. Its rare earth concentration is similar to that of the Pacific Ocean and is several times that of China's terrestrial deposits. In particular, rare earth and other rare earth elements are very abundant.

The researchers believe that iron oxides and other substances emitted from the central ridge will absorb rare earths in seawater and accumulate in the vicinity. The discovery of rare earths is due to the activities of the central Indian Ridge. The sea ridge, also known as the seamounts, is located on the ridge of the central part of the ocean and is called the central ridge.

The researchers pointed out: "This shows that the rare earth-bearing sea mud is not unique to the Pacific and is of great significance. Other sea areas may also discover rare earth deposits that can be developed."
