The Institute of Production Technology of the University of Tokyo announced on the 28th that its research team has developed a cloth that can efficiently absorb radioactive cesium ions dissolved in water. This fabric is expected to be used to remove radioactive helium contamination in soil and water after the Fukushima nuclear accident.
The Institute’s research team, led by Kubota, adopted a new technique to immobilize particles of Prussian blue, a blue pigment that can absorb nevus, onto cloth. A 60 cm long and 40 cm wide cloth made in this way can absorb 99% of 10 mg of cesium dissolved in 10 liters of water. If this cloth is soaked with a hydrochloric acid solution, it can be recovered almost 100%. This kind of cloth is also expected to be used to purify the rainwater accumulated in the gutter or to clean the polluted water from polluted buildings.
The researchers also considered the use of this cloth to remove radioactive material from the soil by first washing the clay with radioactive cesium that is easily adsorbed by the soil, and then heating the fertilizer solution. The clear solution containing radioactive cesium appears on the top. Dipping the cloth into a solution can remove 70% of the radioactive cesium from the contaminated soil.
The research team is planning to continue development of practical materials that can eliminate radioactive contamination, after increasing the absorption efficiency and absorption of fabrics. (Reporter: Lan Jianzhong)
