New method for the production of synthetic diamond

American scientists have invented a new method for producing synthetic diamond cheaply and quickly, which will make diamond coating widely used in industry. 

Although the diamond particles produced by this new technology can be up to 10 nm in size, it is impossible to produce gem-quality diamonds, but it can reduce the production cost of diamond coatings, and it is easy to manufacture and has special requirements for properties such as material hardness. Researchers at Drexel University in Texas reported in the American journal Nature that they succeeded in extracting nanoscale diamonds at an atmospheric pressure. The researchers placed silicon carbide (SiC) in a mixture of chlorine and hydrogen and then heated it to 1000 °C. When chlorine reacts with silicon, the remaining carbon atoms recombine themselves to form various nanoscale carbon material films, including diamond crystals, graphite, carbon nanotubes, and hexagonal diamond crystals. Hydrogen allows this conversion to proceed steadily.
