In recent weeks, the Deyang City Quality Supervision Bureau in Sichuan Province launched a special enforcement campaign targeting environmental protection certifications in the local furniture market. The initiative aimed to ensure that merchants operate with integrity and to safeguard the rights and interests of consumers. This effort reflects the growing importance of environmental compliance in the retail sector.
During the inspection, law enforcement officers evaluated over 40 furniture brands from 10 different dealers, checking them against national mandatory standards outlined in the "Furniture Instructions." Key areas of focus included whether products had proper labels, factory certification documents, quality inspection reports, and detailed information on materials used, including toxic or radioactive substances in paints. Additionally, they verified if certified products were clearly marked with the appropriate environmental protection seals.
This round of inspections covered more than 60 batches of furniture items, such as sofas, dining tables and chairs, beds, wardrobes, shoe cabinets, and coffee tables. The results revealed that only 36.2% of the products on sale had received various environmental certifications. Several issues were identified, including incomplete product specifications and production dates in instruction manuals, as well as some retailers failing to maintain valid certification documents. Some dealers also lacked up-to-date certificates for the products they sold.
In a separate but related effort, the Jingxing Mine Branch of the Shijiazhuang Quality Supervision Bureau in Hebei Province conducted an inspection of furniture sold by five local distributors. The inspection focused on the environmental certification status of a wide range of products, including beds, tables and chairs, TV cabinets, fabric sofas, stand cabinets, and shoe cabinets.
The findings showed that larger furniture stores typically carried fewer, more established brands, often from well-known manufacturers with recognized green certifications. For example, Chengdu Quanyou Furniture Co., Ltd. was found to hold a green environmental certification. In contrast, smaller retailers often stocked a mix of unbranded or low-quality furniture sourced from individual workshops without any certification.
To address these concerns, inspectors actively educated both retailers and consumers about the importance of environmental certifications, relevant laws, and national policies. They provided guidance on how to identify and purchase certified products and urged retailers to ensure their products came with valid certifications moving forward.
This ongoing regulatory effort highlights the increasing emphasis on transparency and consumer protection in the furniture industry, ensuring that only safe, environmentally responsible products reach the market. (Editor: Peter)
