Some auxiliary materials used in the finishing process may also cause pollution. Recently, a customer reported that when buying from a well-known mahogany brand, the sales representative claimed that the surface treatment used either paint or hot wax, which was supposedly harmless. However, upon visiting the factory, the customer observed workers applying what looked like industrial paint directly onto the furniture, leaving a strong chemical smell. This raised questions about whether mahogany furniture is truly safe and pollution-free. According to Sun Shudong, director of the Furniture Inspection Laboratory at the National Furniture and Indoor Environmental Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, some cases of environmental testing have been conducted on mahogany furniture. The standard method involves cutting samples from the furniture and analyzing them in a controlled environment. Formaldehyde is the main testing item, and so far, no不合格 (non-compliant) results have been found. However, there is currently no testing for the paint or wax used in the finishing process. Mahogany furniture differs from regular solid wood or panel furniture in that it typically uses a mortise-and-tenon joint with minimal glue, reducing the risk of formaldehyde emissions. Under normal circumstances, it is considered eco-friendly and safe. However, according to industry insiders, the use of non-environmental materials during painting or waxing can still lead to pollution. Paints and waxes often contain harmful substances such as benzene and heavy metals. Benzene is volatile and difficult to detect in finished products. Heavy metals may remain on the furniture, and since there are limited testing methods for finished products and their accessories, the risk of harm cannot be ignored if the materials are not environmentally friendly. The cost of eco-friendly materials is relatively high. During the production of mahogany furniture, many steps involve chemical additives. Some furniture uses glue to compensate for loose joints in the mortise-and-tenon structure, and if low-quality urea-formaldehyde glue is used, it can increase the risk of non-compliance. Surface treatments usually involve either painting or waxing, and if inferior industrial paints or waxes are used, environmental risks may arise. Zhang Zhengji, chairman of a well-known redwood company, explained that the traditional "big lacquer" technique used since the Ming Dynasty is very different from modern industrial lacquer. The traditional method involves extracting natural lacquer from trees, refining it through more than 20 water milling processes, and polishing it carefully until it fully integrates with the wood. This is vastly different from the current industrial lacquer, which is less natural and more chemical-based. The big lacquer process is often used for high-end furniture, such as red sandalwood and Huanghuali pieces, because the materials and labor involved are costly, adding significant value to the final product. Similarly, the hot waxing process uses natural beeswax or a mix of beeswax, paraffin, and rosin. These materials are significantly more expensive than industrial alternatives, and their quality directly affects the durability and safety of the furniture. Sun Ying, general manager of Daqian Mahogany, noted that while the appearance of mahogany furniture from different brands may seem similar, the prices can vary greatly. This is likely due to differences in the auxiliary materials used, such as paint or wax. Although these materials may not be visible at first glance, poor-quality options can lead to peeling, flaking, and long-term health risks. Consumers are advised to inquire about the materials used and consider testing if necessary to avoid potential harm.
