In this article, we'll be exploring a topic that often comes up: Aco drainage versus channel drainage. Many people mistakenly believe these are two different things, but in fact, they are not. If you're unsure about either product, keep reading, and we'll aim to answer any questions you might have and provide a broader understanding of the two.
What is the difference between Aco drainage and channel drainage?
To start, let's clarify any confusion regarding the differences between Aco drainage and channel drainage.
Aco is the brand name of a leading manufacturer of channel drainage. The confusion arises because the brand dominates the channel drainage market to such an extent that the product itself becomes synonymous with the brand name. In essence, there is no significant difference between Aco drainage and channel drainage since Aco drainage is just a high-quality version of channel drainage. Think of it as the luxury car equivalent in the channel drainage world—whether you choose a premium brand like Aco or a standard model, both will serve the same purpose. The main difference is the cost associated with the brand name. This distinction is important to note if you're trying to keep costs down on a project.
Now that the 'difference' has been explained, let's delve into the functionality of channel drainage.
What do channel drains actually do?
Channel drainage is a linear system designed to remove water runoff from an area and direct it into an underground drainage system. It functions similarly to a guttering system, except it is placed along the edge of a ground-level project instead of on the edge of a roof. For instance, if you have a walkway with a slight slope, channel drainage could be a great solution to efficiently channel water away.
This system relies on gravity, which is why it is typically installed at the end of an inclined or ramped area. The channel drains themselves are built into the driveway at a slight incline to align with the underground drainage system, such as soakaway crates.
Will the channel drain be able to cope with heavy loads?
When purchasing channel drainage, it's essential to consider the load ratings, as each is assigned a specific class. For example, an A15 class indicates a load rating of 1 1/2 tonnes, which is the most commonly purchased type, often used for driveways and patios.

A quick guide on what to remember when installing channel drainage?
- The first thing to remember is that the channel drain will rest on a 50mm concrete bedding.
- Always mark a line 3mm below where the finished surface will be.
- When laying the concrete base, ensure it is level with enough space for the channel drainage unit.
- When connecting your channel drains, remember they are 1m long. If they don't fit the area, use a hacksaw to adjust their size.
- Don't forget to use either end caps or a connection that sends runoff water into a drainage system. Both options are available, and the choice depends on preference.
- Ensure there is a slight incline toward the drain outlet when laying the drainage channel on the concrete.
- Before fitting the grating, replace any pavers around the channel drains, ensuring the grating is at least 3mm beneath the paving level.
