In 1879, Thomas Edison introduced the first incandescent lamp, using a carbon filament, marking the beginning of a major revolution in lighting technology. These early lamps had a relatively short lifespan and low energy efficiency, but they offered excellent color rendering, making them a breakthrough at the time.
The second generation of lighting technology came with the development of halogen lamps. These lamps produce brighter light than traditional incandescent bulbs while consuming about one-third less energy, making them more efficient and longer-lasting.
The third generation of lighting sources includes metal halide lamps. These lamps are named for the metal halides contained within the bulb. Their structure and method of light emission are similar to fluorescent tubes, but instead of relying on phosphor coatings, they use an arc discharge that heats up the metal halides, turning them into vapor and directly emitting visible light. This process significantly improves energy efficiency, reaching up to 90% compared to older technologies. Metal halide lamps are considered a green lighting solution, offering high luminous efficacy, excellent color rendering, and a long service life.
Today, metal halide lamps are widely used in various applications, from high-end automotive lighting and rear-projection TVs to military operations, underwater exploration, and emergency search and rescue missions. Compared to traditional incandescent lamps, they offer remarkable energy savings and have a large market potential. In developed countries like those in Europe and North America, metal halide lamps have already achieved a penetration rate of nearly 40%. However, in China, where over 8 billion bulbs were produced last year, the share of metal halide lamps is still less than 2%. One reason for this is the technical complexity involved in manufacturing these lamps, especially for lower wattages. Currently, China has no production of metal halide lamps below 50W, indicating room for future growth and innovation in this field.
