The reporter learned on the 5th that the "Eastern Sun" (EAST), a project known as the "Artificial Sun" by the media, has achieved significant progress. The Dongfang Superloop Neutral Beam Injection System successfully generated a 100-second long-pulse neutral beam, marking a major breakthrough in China's fusion research.
This achievement is the first of its kind in China and demonstrates the country's growing capabilities in neutral beam injection technology, an essential component for heating plasma in fusion devices. The system was tested on the comprehensive test platform, and the results confirmed its ability to operate for extended periods, which is crucial for future large-scale experiments.
The Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) system is one of two key auxiliary heating systems for the EAST project, which is funded by the National Development and Reform Commission. Developed entirely in China, the system involves advanced technologies across multiple disciplines, including precision high-current ion sources, high vacuum systems, low-temperature engineering, high-voltage isolation, and remote control and diagnostics.
During this experiment, the team completed the setup in just 10 days, successfully generating a long-pulse hydrogen neutral beam with a beam energy of 30 keV, current of 9A, and power of approximately 0.3 MW, sustained for 100 seconds. This not only tested the performance of the high-current ion source but also validated the long-pulse capability of the NBI subsystems.
The results show that China’s self-developed neutral beam injection system has reached international standards and has overcome key technical challenges. This lays a solid foundation for future experiments at EAST, particularly in 2013. The EAST device itself is the world’s first fully superconducting tokamak, designed and built entirely by Chinese scientists, representing a major milestone in the global pursuit of nuclear fusion energy.
