PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or smaller, often called "lung-infiltrating particles." The demand for anti-PM2.5 masks has surged, leading to high prices and aggressive marketing. A simple search for “PM2.5 mask†on major e-commerce platforms reveals over 1,000 products. Many online stores promote their masks with slogans like “Protect your health, stay away from smog!†and “Over 99% PM2.5 filtration efficiency.†Some top-selling models have seen tens of thousands of units sold monthly.
“The masks are flying off the shelves these days,†said a store manager. According to Taobao Index data, sales of anti-PM2.5 masks increased by 40% in the last seven days, with Jiangsu Province leading the country in purchases. Compared to regular masks, which typically cost between 1.5 and 10 yuan, anti-PM2.5 masks range from 20 to 40 yuan. To back up their claims, manufacturers use advanced technologies, such as microfiltration systems made from electret-meltblown polypropylene nonwoven fabric. This material features a micro-electrostatic field that helps trap PM2.5 particles. Some outdoor masks claim to filter up to 99% of PM2.5 and even include activated carbon to absorb harmful gases like formaldehyde and secondhand smoke.
However, experts remain skeptical about the effectiveness of these masks. “Saying that masks can prevent PM2.5 is not entirely accurate,†said Lin Cangzhou, a Chinese materials scientist. “From a technical perspective, ordinary masks cannot block PM2.5, and even N95 masks don’t fully achieve this.â€
As air pollution remains a growing concern, consumers are turning to these masks in hopes of protection. But whether they truly offer the promised benefits is still under debate. It's important for buyers to be informed and cautious when choosing such products.
