Anti-PM2.5 masks are selling at a high price but the "question mark"

With the nationwide adoption of new air quality standards, anti-PM2.5 masks have become a hot topic online. PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less, often called "lung-infiltrating particles." Many shops promote their masks with catchy slogans like “Protect your health, stay away from smog!” and “99% PM2.5 filtration efficiency.” Some top models even sell tens of thousands of units per month. “I’ve never seen masks sell this well before,” said a seller from an online store. According to Taobao Index data, masks labeled as “anti-PM2.5” saw a 40% sales increase in just seven days, with Jiangsu Province leading the country in purchases. Compared to regular masks that cost between 1.5 and 10 yuan, many “anti-PM2.5” masks range from 20 to 40 yuan. To prove their effectiveness, companies claim to use advanced materials such as microfiltration technology—specifically, electret-meltblown polypropylene nonwoven fabric with ultra-fine fibers. This material creates a micro-electrostatic field that traps PM2.5 particles. Some outdoor masks also include activated carbon, which not only captures fine particles but also absorbs toxic gases like formaldehyde and secondhand smoke. However, experts are skeptical about their real-world effectiveness. “Saying that masks can prevent PM2.5 is not entirely accurate,” said Lin Cangzhou, a Chinese materials scientist. “Even N95 masks, which are the highest standard, do not fully block PM2.5.” He emphasized that while these masks may offer some protection, they are not a complete solution to air pollution. As more people turn to masks for protection, it's important to understand both their benefits and limitations. While they may help reduce exposure in certain conditions, long-term solutions require broader efforts to improve air quality and reduce pollution at its source.
