Application of rubber powder for waste rubber recycling and utilization

The primary method of utilizing waste rubber is through the production of recycled rubber and rubber powder. However, traditional recycling methods suffer from high energy consumption, low efficiency, environmental pollution, and lengthy processing steps. As a result, industrialized countries have largely abandoned the production of recycled rubber and now focus more on manufacturing rubber powder. Rubber powder has a wide range of applications. In highway construction, rubber-modified asphalt has been successfully used in many foreign countries, and China has also started testing it on certain road sections. This type of asphalt helps reduce surface cracking and aging, prevents freezing and slipping, enhances driving safety, and significantly extends the road's lifespan—often doubling that of regular asphalt. For example, a 1.63 km by 40 m road can consume around 10,000 pieces of tire-derived rubber powder, showing strong market demand. In airports, adding rubber powder to runway asphalt increases flexibility and friction, improving resistance to extreme weather conditions. This ensures safer takeoffs and landings for aircraft, reduces runway length requirements, and extends the runway’s service life. Compared to SBS-modified asphalt, rubber-modified asphalt offers clear advantages in technology, cost-effectiveness, environmental protection, and resource reuse, making it a promising material for future highway development in China. Beyond infrastructure, rubber powder plays a key role in sports facilities. Track and field fields, tennis courts, and other surfaces often combine polyurethane and rubber powder, which are widely adopted. A full-scale track and field complex may use thousands of tire-derived rubber powder units, while a single tennis court can require up to 500 pieces. Rubber powder is also used in the production of synthetic rubber flooring and tiles. These materials are impact-resistant, flame-retardant, and insulating, making them ideal for gyms, sidewalks, kindergartens, hospitals, and other public spaces. Their elasticity, non-slip properties, and durability make them especially suitable for areas with high foot traffic or where safety is critical. Additionally, they are used in airport terminals, docks, playgrounds, and industrial zones to enhance comfort and safety. The application of rubber powder continues to expand as recycling technologies improve and environmental awareness grows. With its versatility and sustainability, it is becoming an essential component in multiple industries. Article from Hong Kong Plastics Recycling http://Product/
