Australian scientists develop new diamond laser pointers

The laser pointer, also known as the laser pen, the star pen, etc., is a pen-type transmitter that is designed to be a portable, hand-friendly, laser module (light-emitting diode). Common laser pointers include red light (λ = 650 to 660 nm, 635 nm), green light (λ = 515-520 nm, 532 nm), blue light (λ = 445 to 450 nm), and blue-violet light (λ = 405 nm). Recently, scientists from the Macquarie Photonics Research Center in Australia and the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany have jointly developed a 380-watt diamond laser pen, which is 20 times the power of a conventional laser pen. The core technology is a synthetic diamond lens prepared by two research institutes. The power of traditional laser pen equipment is only about 20 watts. The power of the new diamond laser pen developed this time is as high as 380 watts.

Lasers based on synthetic diamond technology are capable of transmitting energy over long distances and are less susceptible to interference from external factors. Its manufacturing equipment has a wide range of important applications in the laser field, space communications and military weapons. The 380-watt diamond laser can easily cut through the steel, and scientists have suggested that this devastating power can also be used to clean up space debris and space debris.

The new diamond laser has a wavelength of 1240 nm, which is longer than the wavelength of a conventional red laser. The longer wavelength means that the space transmission process is not easily interfered by other factors, and the harmful effects on the human body are minimal.

The diamonds used in this new type of laser are not natural diamonds, but laboratory synthetic diamonds. As the manufacturing process matures, scientists can tune synthetic diamonds to a wider range of wavelengths.
