Brazil: Develop new technologies for the production of carbon fiber from bagasse

According to local media reports, researchers at the Federal University of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro have made significant progress in the production of carbon fiber from waste residues from sugar cane ethanol production.

Brazil is a big producer of sugarcane, producing hundreds of billions of litres of ethanol from sugarcane each year. At the same time, it produces a large amount of sugar cane bagasse, which is generally burned as fuel in sugar mills. The piles that can not be burned seriously pollute the environment. In recent years, researchers have studied the production of second-generation sugarcane ethanol from bagasse. Researchers at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro try to make carbon fiber from sugar cane bagasse and turn it into a treasure. Carbon fiber is a kind of advanced material with a wide range of uses. It is generally produced from petroleum and natural gas as raw materials, and many additives must be added.

Researchers at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro have developed a new method. They first extracted lignin from sugar cane bagasse and gradually increased the content of lignin after several processes. Finally, carbon fiber materials were obtained and made into thin plates. This carbon fiber is 10 times harder than steel and it is resistant to high temperatures and softness. The production of carbon fiber from sugar cane bagasse can reduce the dependence on petrochemical raw materials and can achieve environmental benefits.

This scientific research project of the University of Rio de Janeiro is still in the laboratory stage, but this technology has shown the potential for promotion. Researchers said that its cost is definitely lower than that of petrochemical carbon fiber. (Reporter Zhang Xinsheng)
