Scientists from Zhejiang University have developed a novel type of nanopaper by combining filter paper with titanium dioxide (TiO₂) thin films. This innovative material has the ability to interact with various chemical molecules, allowing it to exhibit diverse properties and open up new possibilities in material science—essentially giving it a sense of "wildness" in its applications.
According to Professor Huang Jianguo from the Department of Chemistry at Zhejiang University, the process involves infiltrating and re-hydrolyzing a precursor solution, which enables the TiOâ‚‚ film to coat the nanofibers of the filter paper. Once this is done, the nanopaper can be further infused with solutions containing different chemical molecules, making it possible to create materials tailored for specific functions.
At first glance, the nanopaper looks identical to regular filter paper, but its functionality is vastly improved. As Huang explained, filter paper is made up of countless cellulose fibers, forming a naturally structured network. The hydroxyl groups produced during the hydrolysis of TiOâ‚‚ are highly reactive and can bond with a wide range of molecules. These combined properties give the nanopaper unique characteristics, making it highly versatile.
In one experiment, Huang and his team applied a dye called naphthylamine onto the nanopaper fibers, transforming it into a test paper that changes color when exposed to nitrite. This makes it an effective tool for detecting nitrite levels in food, as the color change provides a clear visual indication of concentration. The research was published online in February this year in the *Journal of the Royal Society of Chemistry* in the UK.
Beyond nitrite detection, the nanopaper can also be used to identify mercury ions, fluoride ions, and even specific DNA sequences. By incorporating a fluorocarbon chain compound, the material can be turned into antibacterial nanopaper, suitable for food preservation and packaging. Due to the non-polar nature of the fluorocarbon chains, the nanopaper becomes "oil- and water-repellent," preventing bacteria from adhering to its surface and enhancing its utility in hygiene-sensitive applications.
