Is genetically modified (GM) food finally becoming safe? A reporter recently visited the Quanzhou market and found that a wide range of food products did not clearly indicate whether they were made from genetically modified ingredients. This lack of transparency has raised concerns among consumers.
"Transfer" or "non-transfer" – the labeling of genetically modified edible oils is mostly subtle, often hidden in small print or unclearly stated.

**Key Tips**
Although many people have heard of the term “genetically modified,†few are clear about whether the foods they consume contain GM ingredients. How close is GM food to our daily lives? Yesterday, the reporter visited several large supermarkets in the city center and discovered that there are actually many GM foods around us, such as soybean oil, soy milk, bean paste, and soy sauce. Are these foods safe? How can we tell if they're genetically modified? Some citizens have called for clearer labeling, urging that GM foods should be clearly marked so that consumers can make informed choices.

**Market Mixes “Genetically Modified†and “Non-Genetically Modified†Products**
In the Xinhuadu Supermarket on Fortress Street, the reporter observed that a variety of edible oils were available at different price points. Upon closer inspection, some products clearly stated “Non-GM†on their packaging, while others containing genetically modified ingredients were labeled with phrases like “Processing raw material is genetically modified soybean.†These details were often placed in small print, making them easy to overlook.
At Parkway Supermarket on Quanxiu Street, pure peanut oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, and rice oil were prominently labeled as “Non-GM.†However, blended oils and soybean oil were marked with smaller text stating “Processing raw materials are genetically modified soybeans†or “Genetically modified rapeseed.â€
**Most Soy Sauces Are Hard to Identify**
Looking at soy sauce, which primarily uses soybeans as an ingredient, the reporter found that out of approximately 17 brands in Tesco Supermarket on Baozhou Street, only five were clearly labeled as “Non-GM,†and one was labeled as “GM.†The rest simply listed “selected soybeans†or “defatted soybeans†without specifying whether they were genetically modified.
Similar issues were found in soybean paste and other similar products. Even within the same brand, labels varied—some were clear, while others were vague. For example, in a Wal-Mart supermarket on Jiangbin Road, one Qiandao sauce only listed “soybean oil†on its label, while a nearby bean paste clearly stated “Non-GM soybeans†on its ingredient list.
This lack of clarity highlights the need for more transparent and standardized labeling practices, so that consumers can easily identify whether the products they buy are genetically modified or not.
