Midsummer Copper Indium Gallium Selenide (CIGS) Battery Reaches New High Efficiency

Midsummer, a pioneer in low-cost flexible film copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) photovoltaic cell production equipment, has recently announced a significant breakthrough. Its latest conversion efficiency has risen from 15% to 16.2%, achieved on a 156x156mm aperture cell. This improvement not only enhances the performance of CIGS thin-film cells but also strengthens their position in the competitive solar market. The company’s R&D team has successfully increased the efficiency of its CIGS cells and is now able to maintain this level during mass production. This marks a major step forward in making high-efficiency thin-film photovoltaics more accessible and economically viable. Sven Lindström, CEO of Midsummer, explained that the company’s photovoltaic cells are based on a stainless steel substrate, using a cadmium-free process that is fully vacuum-based. All thin-film layers, including buffer layers, are deposited using sputtering technology. He emphasized that the results of the engineering team are impressive and represent a solid foundation for future growth. Midsummer's production line operates similarly to conventional twin-crystal photovoltaic systems, allowing it to independently produce photovoltaic cells and assemble them into modules. This flexibility enables the creation of lightweight, flexible photovoltaic modules in various sizes and shapes, tailored to specific customer requirements. The company’s manufacturing equipment uses dry, full-vacuum processes, which significantly reduce the need for stringent clean room environments. Unlike other suppliers, Midsummer avoids the use of cadmium in its production, enhancing safety for workers while also lowering manufacturing costs by reducing the thickness of CIGS layers. Looking ahead, there is a growing trend toward rooftop installations of photovoltaic modules. Sven Lindström noted that large-scale ground-mounted solar farms are becoming less common, especially in Europe. Instead, the focus is shifting to urban buildings, where rooftop solar installations are gaining popularity. Midsummer’s lightweight, flexible thin-film modules are well-suited for such applications. They offer both economic and environmental benefits, as they allow for localized power generation with minimal infrastructure. This makes them an attractive option for urban environments seeking sustainable energy solutions. The company’s long-term goal is to become a leading technology provider in the lightweight and flexible solar module market. As demand for these products grows rapidly, Midsummer is positioned to scale its operations and meet the evolving needs of the industry.
