Thanks to wearing a hard hat

Every time I put on a hard hat now, I'm reminded of what happened three years ago. It was a chilly afternoon in the fall, and my colleagues and I were preparing to move some tubing at the hospital. As I stepped onto the construction site wearing my hard hat, a coworker joked, "This is a simple task. It won’t take long. If you wear a hard hat, you don’t have to." I responded firmly, "You can't be careless or overly careful. You must stay alert." I made sure to secure the chin strap tightly before we began loading the tubing into the truck.

We quickly finished loading the tubing, and then I moved on to the final step: lifting the legs of the tubing truck to the platform. This was a new type of transport vehicle our team had just started using. Due to our unfamiliarity with its operation, something went wrong. As I tried to lift one of the heavy legs, it suddenly slipped and fell directly onto me. The impact knocked me off my feet, and I hit the ground with a loud thud. My head was struck by the falling leg, and for a moment, everything went blank.

My colleagues rushed over, lifted the weight off me, and pulled me up. They asked, "Are you okay?" I checked myself, gave a shaky smile, and said, "I’m fine. I don’t think I’m hurt." One of them looked at my helmet and said emotionally, "Thank goodness you were wearing it. And your chin strap was fastened. If it had come off, the consequences could have been much worse. That thing weighs almost 40 kilograms!"

It really was the hard hat that saved me that day. From that moment on, I made it a rule to always wear a safety helmet whenever I was on a construction site, and I always double-check that the chin strap is properly fastened. It’s a small detail, but it can make all the difference between life and death.
