On May 6, according to reports from Edmunds, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Mercedes-Benz is recalling 272 2013 GL-class vehicles in the United States due to a potential issue with the seat belt bolts. The affected models include the GL3, AMG, GL350 Blue Tec, GL450 4Matic, and GL550 4Matic.
The NHTSA highlighted in its safety review that the second-row seat belt bolts were not properly tightened. In the event of a collision, this could lead to the seat belts failing to provide adequate protection, increasing the risk of injury for passengers.
Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, explained that each vehicle undergoes a thorough inspection before delivery as part of the factory quality control process. During one such inspection, it was discovered that the second-row seat belt bolts on certain vehicles had not been tightened sufficiently.
These vehicles were manufactured between May 15, 2012, and October 4, 2012. Mercedes-Benz dealers will address the issue by tightening the affected seat belt bolts. The recall is expected to begin in May, and owners will be notified directly by the manufacturer.
