Variety of materials professional masks into hot products

The rise in hazy weather has transformed masks—especially those not typically worn on a daily basis—into must-have items. With air quality deteriorating, mask options have evolved beyond simple face coverings, becoming more diverse and specialized. From basic cloth masks to advanced respirators, the market now offers a wide range of choices tailored for different needs. Wang Bo, who runs a 3M mask store on Tmall, shared that their products are selling out quickly. “During periods of poor air quality, we can sell hundreds of masks every day,” he said. “These masks are designed to protect against particulate matter by creating a sealed space around the mouth, nose, and chin. They force the user to breathe through a filter, effectively cleaning the polluted air.” According to Wang, these masks are more professional than regular face masks. They are typically made from anti-particulate filter materials, secured with headbands or ear loops. A metal nose clip helps shape the mask to fit the face, ensuring a tight seal. Some models even include additional sealing features around the nose area. Since these masks are not designed for replacement parts, they must be discarded entirely once they become damaged, making them disposable or maintenance-free. Currently, 3M masks available on the market come in several types, including organic vapor and particulate protection masks, which feature an activated carbon layer to remove odors. There are also welding-specific masks with flame-resistant outer layers and special filter cotton, ideal for environments with high particle exposure. Acid gas and particulate respirators also exist, offering protection against harmful gases. Ms. Ma, a resident of Shijingshan District in Beijing, recently bought a box of 3M masks for her family. “I usually wear a regular cotton mask, but its fibers are too coarse to effectively block small particles,” she explained. “It doesn’t offer reliable protection and can even harbor bacteria. The 3M mask is much more professional and provides better defense.” As awareness of PM2.5 grows, PM2.5 masks have become increasingly popular. These masks use advanced air filter technology capable of capturing particles as small as 0.25 microns, helping to prevent virus intrusion. Many include powder-free granular activated carbon in the middle layer, reducing the risk of fine carbon particles that could irritate sensitive lungs. This refined carbon improves overall safety and efficiency. PM2.5 masks are primarily made from non-woven fabrics and filter paper, with some using lead carbon cloth for enhanced virus protection. Available in various styles such as hanger-type, strap-up, and head-worn, the ear-loop design is the most convenient and comfortable. Most PM2.5 masks are disposable, and reusing them is not recommended, as it reduces their effectiveness. According to one online store’s slogan, “PM2.5 masks significantly outperform regular masks in filtration efficiency, breathability, antibacterial properties, and safety. They can block PM2.5, bacteria, viruses, car exhaust, secondhand smoke, and formaldehyde pollution.” Beyond functionality, mask designs have also caught public attention. One popular model resembles a pig's nose, becoming a hit among younger consumers. Wearing it looks like putting on a cartoon mask, adding a fun and unique touch to everyday protection.
