The rise in hazy weather has turned masks—especially those not typically used on a daily basis—into highly sought-after products. The variety of masks available today is not only expanding but also becoming more specialized, catering to different needs and environments.
Wang Bo, who runs a 3M mask store on Tmall, shared that “the 3M masks are selling out rapidly. During periods of poor air quality, we can sell hundreds of them each day.†He explained that these protective masks are designed to block particulate matter by covering the mouth, nose, and chin. They create a sealed space around the face, forcing the user to breathe through a filter that cleans the polluted air.
According to Wang, these masks may seem a bit over-the-top at first glance, but they are actually professional-grade. They are typically made from anti-particulate filter material, secured with a headband or ear straps. A metal nose clip helps shape the mask for a better seal, and some models even include additional sealing features around the nose area. Since none of the parts are replaceable, once the mask is damaged, it must be discarded entirely, making it a disposable, maintenance-free option.
Currently, 3M masks on the market come in several types, including organic vapor and particulate protection masks, which feature an activated carbon layer to remove odors. There are also welding-specific masks with special filter cotton and flame-resistant outer layers, ideal for environments with airborne particles. Another type is the acid gas and particulate respirator, which includes an activated carbon layer to neutralize acidic odors.
Ms. Ma, a resident of Shijingshan District in Beijing’s western area, recently purchased a box of 3M masks for her family. She noted, “Most of the time, I wear a regular cotton mask, but its fibers are coarse and can’t effectively filter smaller particles. The protection isn’t reliable, and it can even harbor bacteria. 3M masks are more professionally made and offer much better protection.â€
As awareness of PM2.5 has grown, so has the demand for masks specifically designed to combat this pollutant. These masks use advanced air filtration technology, capable of filtering particles as small as 0.25 microns, offering protection against viruses, bacteria, and harmful gases. Many include powder-free granular activated carbon in the middle layer, which avoids the fine carbon dust found in traditional activated carbon fiber masks, making them safer for users with respiratory conditions.
PM2.5 masks are usually made from non-woven fabrics, filter paper, and sometimes lead carbon cloth, which enhances their virus-blocking capabilities. They come in various styles—hanger-style, strap-up, head-worn, and ear-mounted—with the latter being the most convenient and comfortable. Most PM2.5 masks are disposable, and reusing them is not recommended, as it reduces their effectiveness.
A popular slogan from one online store states, “PM2.5 masks far exceed regular masks in filtration efficiency, breathability, antibacterial properties, and safety. They can block PM2.5, bacteria, viruses, car exhaust, secondhand smoke, and formaldehyde pollution.â€
Beyond functionality, mask designs have also evolved to capture attention. One particularly popular model resembles a pig’s nose, turning into a hit among younger consumers. When worn, it fits snugly around the nose, giving the appearance of a cartoon mask. It’s a fun and eye-catching design that adds a playful touch to personal protection.
