Weatherability analysis of phenolic exterior wall insulation materials

Thermal insulation materials play a crucial role in improving building energy efficiency. Over the years, the development and application of these materials have gained widespread attention globally. Since the 1970s, many countries have focused on producing insulation materials and integrating them into construction projects, aiming to significantly reduce energy consumption and, in turn, minimize environmental pollution and the greenhouse effect. The thermal insulation industry abroad has a long history, with building insulation materials making up the majority of the market. New types of insulation materials continue to emerge, each offering unique advantages—some provide excellent thermal performance, others are easy to install, and some offer strong resistance to weather conditions. Phenolic foam boards, glass wool, rock wool panels, polyurethane buried pipes, and steel-sheathed insulated pipes are among the top-performing materials currently available. These products are widely used due to their reliability and effectiveness in different environments. Weather resistance is a key factor in the durability of insulation systems. It refers to how well the system can withstand changes in external climate conditions. In regions with hot summers, humid winters, or large seasonal temperature variations, the ability of insulation materials to resist weathering directly impacts the lifespan of the entire system. To ensure quality and safety, regulatory bodies have established mandatory tests, such as the "polystyrene insulation mortar system" and "polystyrene insulation board thin plastering system," which include weather resistance testing as a required standard. When comparing the water absorption of phenolic foam particles with that of phenolic and rock wool, the former shows a much higher rate, reaching up to 10%. However, since it is typically covered by an outer coating or tiles, which act as a waterproof layer, there is no significant issue with weather resistance. Among the three materials, the water absorption of phenolic polystyrene insulation boards is about 4% higher than that of rock wool extruded boards, but other factors make its weather resistance relatively good. The surface layer of phenolic foam particles is compatible with both coatings and tiles, and both methods involve wet construction. During installation, water is absorbed by the insulation layer and gradually evaporates. Afterward, only 4% to 5% of moisture remains, and it is evenly distributed. This process is similar to that of regular concrete, and the material maintains stable performance once the moisture content stabilizes. Therefore, when calculating insulation values, a sufficient safety coefficient should be applied. Phenolic foam, however, has high water absorption. Once it absorbs water, it softens, leading to reduced thermal performance and structural strength. Local leaks can cause localized damage. As a result, the weather resistance of phenolic granules is moderate and not greatly affected by climate conditions. If exposed to moisture, it may lose up to 30% of its insulation value. Phenolic materials also show some sensitivity to weather, often experiencing a slight drop in insulation performance. Rock wool, on the other hand, exhibits strong weather resistance, but it's not completely immune to issues like condensation-induced bulging on walls. If this occurs, the consequences can be severe.
