The **Abstract** section of the report highlights the recent convening of the China Graphene Standardization Forum, organized by the China Graphene Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance and supported by the Taizhou Municipal Government. The event, held in Taizhou, marked a significant step forward in the development of graphene technology in China. During the forum, the China Graphene Standardization Committee was officially announced, and the China Graphene Research and Testing Public Service Platform was launched simultaneously. This platform is designed to offer specialized testing and structural analysis services for enterprises and research institutions both inside and outside the alliance, aiming to support the growing demand for high-quality graphene materials.
At the same time, the first meeting of the China Graphene Standardization Committee took place, where key topics such as terminology, definitions, and the framework for graphene standards were discussed. Participants also outlined a roadmap for future standardization efforts, emphasizing the need for a unified approach to ensure consistency and quality across the industry.
According to Professor Yan Xiaohong from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, graphene's unique properties—such as its exceptional hardness, extreme thinness, negative electron charge, and outstanding mechanical, electrical, and thermal conductivity—make it a material with vast potential. These characteristics open up promising applications in fields like electronics, aerospace, optoelectronics, energy storage, and biomedicine, offering enormous opportunities for industrial growth.
Since its discovery in 2004, graphene has sparked global interest and research enthusiasm. Li Yichun, Secretary-General of the China Graphene Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance, noted that in recent years, research and industrial development related to graphene have continued to grow rapidly. Countries such as the U.S., Europe, Japan, and South Korea have invested heavily in graphene research and policy support, with many strategic projects aimed at accelerating its commercialization. Universities and research institutes, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, have made significant progress in both fundamental research and application development. Several companies, such as Ningbo Moken, Nanjing Corfu, and Taizhou Junna, have emerged as key players in the field, contributing to the nationwide push for graphene industrialization.
Despite this progress, Ren Wencai, a researcher at the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, pointed out that there remains a lack of consensus within the industry regarding critical technical issues, such as the definition of graphene, performance metrics, preparation methods, and testing techniques. This ambiguity creates challenges for communication and collaboration between downstream companies, hindering the overall development of the sector.
"This is essentially a standardization issue," Ren emphasized. As graphene moves closer to large-scale industrial application, he believes that establishing comprehensive industry standards is essential to ensure quality, consistency, and trust among stakeholders.
Li Yichun added that the current stage of the graphene industry is still in its early phases, and no single company or group has yet dominated the market. This presents an important opportunity for China to take the lead in setting international standards and shaping the future of the global graphene industry.
It is reported that the China Graphene Standardization Committee plans to host the first International Graphene Research, Innovation, and Industrialization Forum in September next year. Additionally, the committee aims to establish an International Graphene Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance, laying a solid foundation for China to play a leading role in the global graphene industry.
