When purchasing a helmet, it's essential to choose products that come with proper certification, trademarks, plant names, production locations, dates, specifications, models, standard codes, production license numbers, and clear product labeling. The markings should be complete, neatly printed, and visually appealing, while the brand itself should have a strong reputation for quality and safety.
One of the first checks you can perform is weighing the helmet. According to the national standard GB811–2010 for motorcycle helmets, full-face helmets should not exceed 1.60 kg, while half-shell helmets should not weigh more than 1.00 kg. If the helmet meets these standards, a slightly heavier model usually indicates better build quality and materials.
Another important aspect is checking the length of the strap connector. The standard requires that the strap connector should not extend more than 3 mm inside or outside the helmet shell. If the connection is made using rivets, this is generally achievable and indicates good manufacturing quality. However, if the connection uses screws and it's difficult to meet the specification, it’s better to avoid such helmets as they may compromise safety.
You should also test the strength of the wearing system. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to properly fasten the straps and secure the buckles. Then, give them a firm pull to ensure they don’t slip, tear, or detach. Any signs of weakness in the straps, connectors, or buckles could indicate a faulty design or poor construction.
If the helmet comes with a visor (which is required for full-face helmets), make sure it’s of high quality. First, check for any visible defects like cracks, scratches, or deformations. The lens itself must be colorless and transparent, made from polycarbonate (PC) material. Avoid helmets that use acrylic (Plexiglass) lenses, as they are less durable and offer inferior protection.
Finally, press the inner padding of the helmet with your fist. It should provide a slight rebound, indicating that it’s neither too hard nor too soft. The padding should feel firm but comfortable, without any dents or lumps that could affect performance during an impact.
