How to choose a safety helmet

The markings should be neat, the printing clear, and the design well-organized, reflecting a high-quality brand reputation.

Next, consider the weight of the helmet. According to the national standard for motorcycle helmets, GB811-2010, full-face helmets should not exceed 1.60 kg, while half-face helmets should not weigh more than 1.00 kg. If a helmet meets these standards, a slightly heavier model often indicates better quality and more robust materials.

Another important feature to check is the length of the strap connector. The standard specifies that the connector should not extend more than 3 mm inside or outside the shell. If it's riveted, this requirement is usually met easily, and the manufacturing process is generally reliable. However, if the connection uses screws and is difficult to achieve, it's better to avoid such designs as they may compromise safety.

Also, test the strength of the wearing system. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to properly fasten the straps and secure the buckles. Then, apply firm pressure to ensure the straps do not slip, tear, or detach, and that the connectors remain intact and the buckles stay firmly in place. Any signs of weakness here could indicate a poor-quality product.

If the helmet comes with a visor (which is mandatory for full-face helmets), inspect its quality carefully. First, check for any visible defects like cracks or scratches on the lens. Second, ensure the lens is colorless and transparent, made of polycarbonate (PC) material. Avoid lenses made of acrylic or plexiglass, as they are less durable and offer inferior protection.

Lastly, press the inner padding of the helmet with your fist. There should be a slight rebound, indicating good shock absorption. The padding should not feel too hard, uneven, or compressed. A well-designed inner layer will provide comfort and effective impact resistance during use.
